Rainwater Harvesting Workshops & Events

Tuesday, May 25, 2010
The Lions Hall, Salt Spring Island
4 - 7 pm

The Salt Spring Water Council is hosting a water conservation event to launch "A Soft Path Strategy for SSI" prepared by the Polis Water Sustainabilty Project.

Displays and demonstrations of water efficient fixtures and rainwater catchment systems. Come and talk to Bob about your rainwater needs.

From 7 pm onward the Water Council, Islands Trust and the CRD will introduce a presentation by Polis representatives on the "Soft Path Approach" to water management.

Watch for Upcoming Events and Workshops on Salt Spring, Gabriola, and Pender Islands.

Rainwater Harvesting Presentations and Workshops

Public presentations, seminars, and workshops are an important part of the Rainwater Connection’s dedication to water management and conservation, and the use of rainwater as a sustainable resource.

Over the past 8 years Bob Burgess has presented to numerous Conservancy groups; Island Water Group meetings, garden groups, nurseries, and conferences such as the North American Rainwater Collection Systems Association, and the Victoria Thinking Outside the Pipe workshop series.

There are four 4 types of public presentations and workshops we can present in your community. Let us know what would suit you.

Public Speaking and Power Point Presentations

A Power Point presentation on rainwater reviews the environmental as well as the economic reasons for collecting rainwater; and describes examples from around the world and just around the corner.

Bob Burgess likes to use slides from recent projects to show how rainwater is collected from roofs, cleaned, transported to a tank, and then distributed to the garden, or pressurized and sanitized as a home’s potable water supply.

If the emphasis is on outdoor (non potable) use the slides focus on how people are getting started in their own backyards or decks with rain barrels, small tanks, inexpensive pumps and drip watering.

Presentations address:

  • water conservation benefits
  • water quality benefits
  • how much rainwater can be collected and used in summer
  • how to clean the water before it gets to the tank
  • how to get the water to the garden

Whenever possible we bring examples of rainwater harvesting devices for a “show and tell” question and answer session at the end.

Gardening System Demonstrations

In response to a growing demand from both rural and urban gardeners, the Rainwater Connection has constructed a demonstration board showing a very simple way to clean the water before it enters your storage tank or rain barrels.

The board shows a simple piping system that can be built by many do-it-yourselfers for less than $100 from parts available in most hardware/ home building stores. Pre built packages can also be supplied by The Rainwater Connection.

Rainwater Connection Display Board

The board also demonstrates how additional debris devices can be added that can reduce your tank cleaning to a 10-15 years cycle.

These presentations are usually done as an afternoon drop in, at Hardware stores or nurseries; garden shows/community fairs, or as part of a community rainwater day. We can also bring and demonstrate some specialized tanks, and pumps that are suited to rainwater systems and that reduce water usage.

Design/Build Workshops

The Rainwater Connection presents a hands-on workshop for a limited number of people who are seriously considering the collection and use of rainwater for their gardens or for use inside the home.

Half Day Workshops

These workshops are a long half day and can accommodate up to 8 people (or families). The typical cost is $80 per person. Where possible the workshop is held at the home of one of the participants. A rain harvesting system will be designed, and possibly built, during the workshop so that each person can go home and build their own system.

During this practical, fact filled session, each participant will get enough information to design and build their own rainwater harvesting system.

This includes:

  • calculating the quantity of rainwater your can collect from your roof
  • using existing well or groundwater supply (springs) most effectively
  • the most appropriate size and type of cistern/tank
  • the best gutter and downspout design for capturing the highest proportion of available rainfall
  • how to “clean” the water before it gets to your storage tank
  • different ways to pressurize the water to its destination
  • preliminary estimate of parts costs

Full Day/Weekend Workshops

The cost of these more intensive workshops varies depending on the number of people and the subject matter. These longer workshops are recommended for those wanting to build potable water systems and include a more detailed examination of water pressurization and disinfection methods. Enrollment is limited to ensure sufficient one –to-one time to complete a system design. Please contact us to discuss what content you would like to see in a workshop for your organization.
